Can Taproom Chains compensate for declining beer sales?

The brewing industry is looking for solutions to declining beer sales, and some breweries are opting to open additional taprooms in a variety of locations to diversify their revenue streams. For example, Breakside Brewing in Portland adjusted its post-2020 strategy by increasing packaged beer production, opening two satellite taprooms and finding that these helped increase local can and bottle sales. Other breweries, such as Sun King Brewing, have also adopted this approach, opening several taprooms in different regions to boost sales and strengthen their local presence.

However, creating chains of taprooms is not without its challenges. Some establishments, such as Modern Times Beer and Oskar Blues, have closed branches, underlining the need to maintain authenticity and adapt to new audiences without compromising quality. Breweries succeeding in this approach emphasize carefully thought-out taproom designs, staff education and sufficient investment, while recognizing the importance of offering memorable experiences to build long-term customer loyalty.
